Cet ouvrage illustré de 360 pages est une vaste analyse détaillée des villas de A. Palladio, E. Lutyens, F.L. Wright, A. Loos, G. Rietveld, Mies van der Rohe, Le Corbusier, L.I. Kahn, M. Botta, P. Eisenman. Il s’atèle à dépasser les différences stylistiques entre ces constructions pour dégager les stratégies et les mécanismes compositionnels mis en oeuvre par ces architectes dans le champ de l’habitat individuel. Ces mécanismes portent le nom de schème compris comme ‘‘structure d’ensemble d’un processus’’ dont la valeur principale est d’être un outil de conception valable tant pour l’analyse d’oeuvres architecturales que pour leur production.

Cette étude entend offrir au lecteur une approche méthodologique de la composition dégagée de règles restrictives puisque la qualité inhérente du schème est son ouverture, ce qui le rend susceptible d’être transformé, combiné... dans de multiples configurations. L’ouvrage montre ainsi la manière dont certaines solutions architecturales sont le fruit de la combinaison de divers schèmes, démontrant par ce fait que l’architecte ne crée pas une solution mais transforme ses références pour les rendre compatibles au problème qui lui est soumis. L’architecte construit son objet plus qu’il ne le trouve.

Cet ouvrage constitue un outil pratique et pédagogique puisqu’il aborde l’architecture et sa composition  sur base de mécanismes propres à la pratique architecturale. Ce support peut aisément servir de base à une conception théoriques des ateliers d’architecture basé sur une lecture structurelle de la composition et une appréhension synchronique de l’histoire de l’habitat occidental.

Il met également en place une lecture de l’architecture via le canal graphique, une voie d’enseignement possible de la composition architecturale.

This 360-page illustrated book is a vast detailed analysis of the villas of A. Palladio, E. Lutyens, F.L. Wright, Loos A., Rietveld G., Mies van der Rohe, Le Corbusier, L.I. Kahn, M. Botta, P. Eisenman. It strives to overcome the stylistic differences between these constructions to identify the strategies and the compositional mechanisms implemented by these architects in the field of individual housing. These mechanisms are called schemas understood as "overall structure of a process" whose main value is to be a valid design tool both for the analysis of architectural works and for their production.

This study intends to offer the reader a methodological approach to architectural composition freed from restrictive rules since the inherent quality of the schema is its opening, which makes it likely to be transformed, combined ... in multiple configurations. The book shows how some architectural solutions are the result of the combination of various schemes, demonstrating that the architect does not create a solution but transforms its references to make them compatible with the problem that is submitted to it. The architect builds his object more than he finds it.

This book is a practical and educational tool since it deals with architecture and its composition based on mechanisms specific to architectural practice. This support can easily serve as a basis for a theoretical conception of architectural workshops based on a structural reading of the composition and a synchronic apprehension of the history of Western housing.

It also sets up a reading of the architecture via the graphic channel, a possible way of teaching the architectural composition.
